KNIFE CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Congratulations on your brand new, handcrafted Ryan Chadbourne Knifeworks purchase. I’ve outlined these very important steps you should take to ensure that your blade lasts longer and performs as it’s intended.

If you are new to High Carbon knives, I would highly encourage you to read this article from SERIOUS EATS.

IMPORTANT CARE INFORMATION:

Carbon steel will rust if left out in the elements or left wet on a cutting board to dry on it’s own. Please make sure you are familiar with the care required for carbon steels. It’s easy: just wipe after cutting something, handwash, and completely wipe dry before storing. It will get a patina through normal use

PATINA DEVELOPMENT:

Carbon steel blades will develop patina, which can be mistaken for rust. There is a difference between a patina and rust. Rust is Iron Oxide. It is normally red in color. It is formed from the reaction between Iron and Oxygen in the presence of moisture (air). Patina is a thin blue/light brown/gray layer that forms on the surface. A knife with a healthy patina is better protected from rust. To promote a good patina on your blade, simply use it! You can promote faster development of a patina by cutting lightly acidic fruit like apples/ pears, slicing raw chicken, or even lightly soaking in household items like instant coffee or a vinegar/water mixture.

Enjoy your new blade and thank you for the support!
